Milk thistle (Silybum marianum), an anti-oxidant, contains flavonoids that protect the liver. The liver detoxifies hormones and other chemicals produced in the body and is an easy target for damage by any toxins ingested. Silymarin is the active extract of Milk thistle which contains the following flavonoids: Silibin, silydianin and silychristin. Silibin is a flavonolignan.
Phytosomes are water-soluble flavonoids that are combined with lipid-soluble complexes. Flavonoids are altered in this way to allow them to pass more easily through the cell walls of the intestine and into the blood. The phospholipids used to combine with the flavonoids are from soy, especially phosphatidylcholine (PC). The most active flavonoid is silibin that can be rendered more active by combining it into a silibin-PC complex, which is more bio-available. PC has nutrient value of its own, is beneficial for the liver and aids in the repair of cell membranes.
Siliphos is one specific silibin phytosome. This product was found to increase the speed by which silibin entered the bile after a dosage was taken. Silibin reaches the bile about two hours after a dose of Siliphos is given. Clinical studies on silibin phytosome show improved recovery from alcoholic hepatitis, acute viral hepatitis A and B and hepatitis of undetermined cause.
CONCLUSION: “Silibin, when taken by mouth, is poorly absorbed even at a very high intake… However, when taken by mouth as phytosomes bound to PC, silibin is well absorbed and detected in the blood within the first hour.”
NOTE: The body is depleted of glutathione in the process of liver detoxification. Milk thistle increases production of glutathione by the liver. Glutathione can be taken as a supplement. PC can be consumed as a supplement on its own.
