The authors studied the homeopathic form of Arnica Montana for pain reducing ability following tonsillectomy. Arnica is used to reduce bruising, reduced swelling and speed healing. The study included 180 patients who were over 18 years of age who received either Arnica 30C or a placebo post-tonsillectomy. The patients were to take two tablets six times on the first post-operative day and then two tablets two times a day for seven days.
The outcomes were studied by questionnaire and the group that used Arnica had a statistically significant lower pain score than the placebo group from day ten to day fourteen. There were no other differences between the two groups and no difference in how long it took the two groups to return to work.
CONCLUSION: The homeopathic form of Arnica Montana provides a statistically significant decrease in pain scores when compared to placebo. “…Arnica Montana given after tonsillectomy provides some benefits.”
NOTE: Arnica Montana is commonly used to reduce the pain of soft tissue swelling following surgery or dental work and in soft tissue athletic injuries. Read about Homeopathy and cancer care.
