Conditionally essential nutrients (CENs) are compounds produced in our bodies in sufficient amounts under usual conditions. The amount produced is not sufficient under the conditions of disease and these nutrients are required for recovery from disease.
The primary CENs for cardiovascular disease are l-arginine, l-carnitine, propionyl-L-carnitine and CoQ-10 (ubiquinone.) These CENs are supported by extensive research showing their benefits.
Secondary CENs, such as Taurine, are supported by less extensive research. There is evidence of benefit from using them. Brief mention is made in the literature of the benefits of taking alpha lipoic acid, betaine, chondroitin sulfate, and d-ribose for cardiovascular disease.
Propionyl-L-carnitine enters muscle cells faster than plain carnitine does and studies of propionyl-L-carnitine used 2-3 grams per day. Studies of l-arginine used doses of 6-21 grams and more per day. Studies of l-carnitine used 2-3 grams per day. Study doses of CoQ-10 ranged from 60 mg. twice a day to 100 mg. three times a day. Doses of taurine ranged from 500 mg. to 3 grams per day.
CONCLUSION: The above products have shown benefit in cardiovascular diseases, including chronic heart failure, myocardial infarction (heart attack), angina pectoris, and intermittent claudication, and for cardio-vascular risk factors such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The author suggests that health care professionals become acquainted with these supplements.
