Copper is an essential trace mineral for the human body. Of the 110 mg. in a 70 kg person, 46 mg. is in the bone. Copper-dependent transport systems are important for iron and zinc to be delivered to different parts of the body.

In spite of the importance of copper, copper-containing pharmaceuticals* have not been developed. Cardiovascular dysfunctions in rats have been relieved by some forms of copper treatment. Some forms of copper have been shown to have an anti-diabetic effect.
