Because the benefit of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to the brain of the human fetus is so well established, it is suggested by this author that mothers be supplemented during pregnancy and during breast feeding with DHA. The intake of DHA by the mother during the last trimester of pregnancy is especially important to the fetus.
Although a specific dose is not given in this review, one study gave mothers 6 fish oil capsules per day. Further study is needed.
CONCLUSION: The author of this letter to the editor believes that there is sufficient information of the benefit of DHA to the human fetus and the infant during breast feeding (especially for the nervous system) for the mother to use DHA. Maternal use of DHA is known to supply it to the baby.
