The significance to human health of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) is still controversial. The present study is to evaluate the influence of such fields on oxidative* human stress and to test whether green tea polyphenols** may alter it.
Workers exposed to ELF-EMFs and some not exposed were tested with urine tests for oxidative damage on a total of 867 subjects. Those workers exposed showed consistently elevated urinary values of chemicals indicating oxidative damage to their tissues.
After 12 months of treatment with green tea polyphenols, these urinary values indicating oxidative stress returned to normal. The workers presumably continued to be exposed to ELF-EMFs. That protective effect was lost 3 months after the workers discontinue the green tea.
CONCLUSION: Power lines have a negative effect on workers exposed to them. However, that effect can be altered by supplementation with green tea polyphenols.
NOTE: *Oxidative stress causes actual damage to cells and results in inflammatory diseases, playing a major part in modern “diseases of civilization.”
**Green tea polyphenol content is highest in Matcha powdered green tea.
