The Bahadori Leanness Program is a program to lose weight, especially fat and includes a “mini-fast with exercise.” During each 24-hour period there is a 12-14 hour fast with a period of aerobic exercise included. Low fat, high protein and low glycemic index diets are encouraged. The ability to lose fat is aided by burning stored fat in this way, which is increased by doing prolonged, moderately intense exercise during the fasting.
Food should not be eaten for several hours after exercise for optimal fat loss. Patients who exercise in the morning are asked not to eat after exercise until lunch. Patients who exercise around lunchtime are asked not to eat until an early dinner. People who exercise in the evening are asked to exercise 2 hours after dinner and to fast until the next morning.
At meal time people can eat as much as they wished as long as it is low fat, high protein and of a low glycemic index.
Alternate day feedings are even more effective in rodents than caloric restriction, in regards to the protection of the nervous system. Aerobic exercise is also neuroprotective.
Alternate day fasting in rodents has been shown to reduce cancer growth. Apoptosis, the natural death of abnormal cells such as cancer cells, is increased by mini-fasts. Alternate day fasting in rodents leads to a voluntary 30% reduction in caloric intake.
The low insulin levels associated with regular fasting and exercise result in lower sympathetic nervous system tone and increased parasympathetic tone. This has the overall effect of reduced risk of hypertension and reduced risk of death from arrhythmias.
CONCLUSION: The Bahadori Leanness Program seems to be a good program for losing fat. Patients eat a healthy diet and are asked to fast for 14 hours a day with an episode of aerobic exercise during the fast. There are additional benefits in addition to weight loss, including improved blood pressure, reduced cancer risk and reduced caloric intake.
